The Labour Party has called for the decentralisation of the Nigeria Police Force to pave the way for regional, state, local and community policing to tackle the ravaging insecurity across the country.

The party made the call in a communique issued at the end of its National Convention held on Wednesday at the Grand Seasons Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Decrying the state of insecurity in the country, especially in Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, and some other states, the party called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to secure the lives and property of Nigerians, which is the primary responsibility of the government.

It regretted that after the 2023 general election, the security situation of the nation had not in any way improved, noting that there was a geometrical increase in the number of lives lost.

It also lamented that the economy had worsened as the standard and conditions of living of the Nigerian populace continued to deteriorate.

The communique reads in part, "The Convention also calls for general restructuring of the security architecture to meet up with current security challenges facing the nation.

"The Convention advocated for decentralization of the Nigerian Police Force to pave way for regional, state, local and community policing."

Regarding global security, especially the war in Gaza, it called for an immediate ceasefire and advised the world powers to proffer an immediate solution to halt the killing of women and children and the destruction of properties.

It reads, "The world powers should exercise restraints in the war between Hamas and Israel, and come to a truce to end the killings and destructions.

"The Convention calls on the United States of America and all those behind the scenes fueling the conflict to come to a truce for a peaceful Middle East."

The Convention had in attendance members of the National Working Committee, National Executive Committee, Peter Obi, National Leader, Deputy Governor Abia State, Labour Party senators, House of Representatives members, State House of Assembly members, Labour Party commissioners, among others.
