Governor Jang Is Ripe For International Criminal Court-A Rejoinder

I read with keen interest the recent piece on Saharareporters.com by Pindar G. Mshelia who wrote from Maiduguri Borno State with the above title. I sympathize with the author for the death of his relatives who were killed in the latest violence in Jos. Although the author claims to be a Christian from Biu in Bornu State, it does seem like he resides in another planet instead.  I say that because as recently as four months ago the entire north-eastern Nigeria, which includes Borno State was held hostage for six days running by the Boko Haram fanatics.  Was Pindar G. Mshelia in Maiduguri at all then?  It is on record that the worst acts of economic and political discrimination against Christians take place in Borno and Kano States.  Virtually every Bura/Babbur person of note in the Bornu State civil service meets the same fate: get pushed out after you train new Kanuri hires.

Those of them employed in federal establishments in Borno State are not spared in this pattern of sectarian inspired discrimination and victimization.  A case in point exists in the person of Professor Sunday Bwala the best Neuron-surgeon in the north-east and scholar of international repute who has been denied both the positions of Chief Medical Director and Vice Chancellor of the University of Teaching Hospital and University of Maiduguri respectively simply because he is a Christian.  There are many other southern Borno indigenes who have been frustrated out of the Borno State civil service on account of their religious fait or ethnicity.

It is an open secret that no southern Borno indigene can be allowed to become a state governor in Borno State. All these pointers on the specific acts of discrimination directed at indigenes of Bornu State simply because of they profess Christianity constitute cause for one wonder if Pindar G. Mshelia and others who subscribe to his perspective on the state of affairs in the state might be either liars or they are in denial per se.  In fact, it is the governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda who is supposed to be arraigned before a human rights court for unconscionable acts genocide that he condones time and time again against Christians in Bauchi in the last few years.

The sad aspect of it all is that this unwarranted persecution of Christians all over northern Nigeria is not restricted to Bauchi State alone. As at this very moment Professor Andrew Nok who is obviously a well qualified candidate in the running to be Vice Chancellor at the Ahamadu Bello University, ABU Zaria is in the bad books of Islamists who are hell-bent on denying him the office on the rationale of his faith as  a Christian.

One is compelled here to ask Mr Pindar G. Mshelia why Bornu State should not accept a Christian to occupy the office of deputy governor or the speaker of the House of Assembly given that Christians constitute the majority population in at least nine of the Local Government Areas, LGAs in the state.

In contrast, in Plateau State where Muslims constitute the majority population in just a single LGA, Kanama, a Hausa Muslim settler is the deputy speaker of Plateau state House of Assembly.  Yet, Hausa Muslims in the state take to violence so quickly at the least provocation.  Would anyone who decides to view Muslim settlers in Plateau State as an ungrateful bunch be called crazy?  Perhaps the best that voters in Jos North/Bassa LGA could do the 2011 elections would be to refuse to cast their vote for any Hausa Muslim settler again especially to the House of Representative.

Finally I can see that Ibrahim Dasuki is gradually coming out of his frustration as a result of his being deposed as Sultan of Sokoto.  I can see that he is trying to blame everybody but the Hausa Muslims who are actually the problems of Nigeria for now.  The only viable solution to Nigeria’s socio-political problems is the Sovereign National Conference. Let us all sit down and talk things through rather than resorting to free for all blood letting that consumes the lives of innocent people. Going by its refusal to bring the perpetrators of all the violence in Plateau State since 1999, there is little doubt that elieve the Federal Government has a hand in it.  Those who sponsor the violence are based in Abuja.  Hence, the silence from Abuja each time.

Goodluck Jonathan said that this latest blood letting will be the last.  That will be true only if the sponsors and their foot soldiers are brought to justice in Jos.  Unless “Sheik” General Saleh Maina who has been found wanting should be discharged from the Army for the cloud that hangs over his head as regards the blood letting in Jos no one will take Jonathan seriously.

As for you Mr. Pindar G. Mshelia, I really pity you and your own, because as Christians in Borno State, if you are truly from there, the future does not hold much good in stock for you. Unless you and people like you wake up and fight for your rights, your faith will continue to condemn you to sectarian discrimination.  A word is enough for the wise. n.

Let's be objective and rational in airing our opinions and not shy away from the fact that the north's backwardness is a product of it's frequent religious flare ups, marginalization, religious extremism etc.Crucifying Gov. Jang is not the issue, but educating our people on the need for peace and tolerance and sometimes face reality.

To achieve peace there must be give and take from both side. Also our display of immaturity on this blog is only a reflection of our poor sense of judgment and lack of maturity. In a conflict situation we must be careful not to fuel issues.
The Muslims and Christians must return to God for forgiveness. The issue in Jos is Economical and un-even allocation of resources, couple with a leadership at the state that is not focus on development. I think the commoners must stop fighting among themselves, rather we should hold our leaders accountable.

I stand to be corrected

.....I'm curious. Why are all religious crisis in Nigeria always happening only where the Hausa/Fulani are? Are they the only muslims in Nigeria? We have muslims in Kwara, Kogi, Auchi, Nassarawa, etc., but they never cause trouble. The Hausa/Fulani just want to dominate everywhere (by hook or crook - or even by force!), hiding behind the guise of religion. No Jos man/woman has gone to Kano, Bauchi, Katsina, etc., to contest anything (wuna no go gree dem sef!).

LEAVE JOS POLITICS FOR THE JOS PEOPLE.

The Lord we serve will not allow such to happen. How many killings have taken place in the North unchecked??? countless of course, yet its all about the supposed 'genocidal Jang'. Enough of these lies and anger. Other countries have both religions, yet we do not hear of such heinous crimes against humanity in the name of god!!!! Infact we do not hear of such in the southern part of Nigeria which has a large muslim population why so?? They are more moderate and civilized ko?? Plateau state shall NEVER be forced into accepting a wrong doctrine and if it takes our last blood to protect that, so be it!! why don't u writers of hate go to the battle field?? I am from Jos, and my family Christian. Back in 2001 when violence broke out along religious lines, my father on his way back from Abuja drove into a Muslim road block. They did not hurt him, they actually volunteered to escort his car to safety even though he was a Christian. The reason they gave him? " We know you are a good man". Later on that week, we hid our Muslim Neighbor in our house while Christians burnt down his house. He stayed with us until we could smuggle him, his wife and children out to safety. The problems in Jos are many, and I hope we will get to all of them, but the first issue is the failure of Law Enforcement to maintain the peace and protect lives and property. Everything else is secondary, and not unique to Jos. There are racial, ethnic, and religious problems in other countries, but they never escalate to violence in civilized society, thanks to Law Enforcement.

This is the problem with nigeria, we fail to separate ethnicity from religion. the hausa , Fulani have forgotten that Islam like Christianity is not their religion from birth.
the folly is this: Iran and co who pride themselves as Islamic republics have the worst human right policy. In Sokoto where I lived for seven years, people of Maradun now in Zamfara state were not only marginalized but refused employment unless they denounced christianity.
I challenge anyone to disprove it. Why should Islam become a problem, ala alqaeda.

It is worthy of note that a large number of us have relatives that do not belong to the same religion. We must desist sowing the seed of hatred and learn to live with one another irrespective of our religious believes. I am not happy that my once sweet and serene state has now been turn into a war zone. I, as an "indigene" cannot visit my community today because of the unknown! This is terribly bad for Nigeria. Was Jang Governor in 94? 2001?. If the Jihadist of Dan Fodio won in other parts in the North to pronounce Hausa & Banza bakwei(7), That Jihad was not able to capture Jos-Plateau, they only succedded in Wase, where they still hold sway.
But you can't succeed now when your great grand parents fail on the Berom people. So just kindly hold your peace and you must respect the Government on the Plateau at all times. You claim you won in Jos North but yet did not go to the tribunal to challenge. You thought Yar'adua will declare state of emmergency in Plateau. That mistake of Dariye cannot happen again as no structure of democracy is removed with State of emmergency. Be also rest assured, we the Plateau people will vote for JANG any-time-T.
Meanwhile, why did 'Daily trust' not request for the Bauchi State Governor to be tried for genocide or better still Borno Governor who was tipped to have ben a major sponsor of the Boko Haram leader and his extra judicial order of Yusuf to be killed?

I am glad someone finally touched a bit on the issue affecting the non-Hausa- Fulani in Northern Nigeria.
I challenge all those critising this write up to take a look at the civil service records of all the Northern states, see if any, the number of Christians who made it to the position of director in their civil service careers, compared with the muslims.
Can a 3rd generation Berom man living in Sokoto or katisna ever become a local government councilor in either of these states? So why should a Hausa-Fulani man be a speaker in Plateau state?
We have to address these issues squarely, Nigeria does not belong to Hausa-Fulani, and they cannot continue to have their way at our collective expense. The situation is no different at the Federal level, if the roles were reversed between Jonathan and Yaradua, would we still have a president MIA after 76 days?

The only reason Hon Saleh Hassan is representing Jos North/Bassa Constituency is because the indigenes keep fielding more than one candidate (2 in 2003 and I heard about 4 in 2007). When this happens, the muslims give there all to there man while the foolish chritian majority shared there total votes between there candidates.I do not subscribe to violence nor against voting a muslem but I think the Hausa Muslems should learn to respect the right of other Nigerians to existence and there right to be elected aswell. It breaks my heart to see that a man who calls himself a Dr. would result to insult to reply an article. If you disagree, why not just say so. I live in Jos, I saw with my eyes. This article is more accurate that most of you are willing to say. Plateau is More than 40% muslim?? what do you base your number on? That is so inaccurate!

The hand of God is at work in Nigeria... anyone who knows about the story of Pharaoh and his refusal to let the people of God -Israelites- go, will know that what is happening in the British failed project called Nigeria is God at work and about to liberate his people from the evil leprosy hands of those that with the help of their colonial masters kept the otherwise free and God fearing people in bondage since 1914. The Pharaohs has been with power for years yet getting poorer than those they claim to be ruling, and having nothing but misery to show for it!
The Plagues is on the way for Pharaoh and his people.

Thank God, the Hausa's are not washing the dirty pants of Jang Hitler and his blood thirsty Jazi(Nazi)

Babrik,
Do get your facts correctly next time. Plateau is more than 40% muslim. You need to know that Jos north is more populous than some 5 other local govts put together and is predominantly muslim. Wase is undoubtedly muslim as is Quanpa'an. Mangu and Bassa LGAs have their own share.

However, that is not even the issue. The issue is that based on the complexities of Gov Jang in the crisis, he deserves a special place in the ICC cell.

I the piece by Mshelia in some of the National Dailies and come to conclusion that Ndiameeh Babrik indeed does not want to say the truth. I am glad some people have answered him. I cannot imagine that someone like him could conveniently refused to acknowledge (if saying the truth is difficult for him)that indeed genocide took place in Kuru Karama and the barbaric and gruesome murder has tell tale signs of some highly placed people in Plateau State for reasons best known to them. Please be rest assured that no matter what it takes, the perpetrators of these heinous crime would not go unpunished. If people have any grievances, they should settle them in the most civilized and lawful manner. I must say that the root cause of all this problem is the indigene and non-indigene dichotomy in Plateau State.

Dr Ladan. Is your doctorate in terrorism or in malu rearing? You need to go back to secondary school to learn how to spell. Alternatively you can write in Arabic

N Babrik, U may refer Mshelia as a bad or christian in disguise... simply because he didnt take side wit what u feel was right. I believe if he had joined u in condemning the other side, he would have been your hero!

is like u r claiming to know everything, but unfortunately you need to do more research. you said a hausa muslim is a deputy speaker in plateau because of the only hausa muslim majority LGA Kanama which i believe you are refering to Kanam... am sorry to tell u that kanam is only a muslim majority LGA and not hausa majority. Again the duputy speaker u r refering was elected from Bassa and Jos noth LGAs, moreover jos north have the hausas as majority, may be when u come back from UK you can come over and take a survey yourself. the population of jos north alone is more than 3 other LGA's in the plateau when compared.

I suggest you use a different medium to air your grievances between you and your political interest. Remember that Mshelia is not a hausa man, and his relatives ware also not hausas but because they ware muslims living there, they were murdered. Dont you think that if it were your relatives or if you are the one as a muslim living there, they or you wouldnt have been killed? Just think again...

I have a lot of respect for you Mr. Ndiameeh Babrik, but I must confess to you that I’m rather disappointed in your rejoinder . I expected a man of your caliber to remain neutral and suggest a way forward rather than fueling the already burning fire. Your words are not carefully chosen and you have clearly shown where you stand which is unlike any well learned person. Your comparison with Borno south suggests to any average learned person that it is the right thing that is going on in Jos and as such should be emulated in Borno south. This is very wrong.
