Melinda Gates, former wife of the co-founder of the software giant, Microsoft, Bill Gates, has announced her resignation from the philanthropy group, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation she launched with her ex-husband.
AFP quoted Melinda as saying on social media that "After careful thought and reflection, I have decided to resign from my role as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation" effective June 7.
Melinda and Bill announced their divorce in May 2021 after 27 years of marriage, saying "We no longer believe we can grow together as a couple".
The billionaire couple who first met in the 1980s when Melinda joined Bill's Microsoft firm said that "After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage."
They have three children and have been jointly running the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The foundation has spent billions fighting causes such as infectious diseases and encouraging vaccinations in children.
