If Inflation, Naira Devaluation Continue To Rise, Our Proposed N615,000 New Minimum Wage Won’t Be Enough For Workers—Nigeria Labour Congress

Ajaero said N615,000 minimum wage could be paid conveniently by all the states in the country if there is political will.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero has insisted that the current minimum wage that can give workers a better life in Nigeria is N615,000.

Mr Ajaero had rejected the 35% pay rise for workers in the country by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

SaharaReporters on Tuesday reported how President Tinubu approved an increase of between 25% and 35% in salary increase for civil servants on the remaining six consolidated salary structures.

Speaking further on his position when he appeared on Channel TV, Ajaero said N615,000 minimum wage could be paid conveniently by all the states in the country if there is political will.

He said, “I think we need to understand our politics today and the issue of not getting our priorities right. Most of the states that have shown willingness to pay are not among those that are getting the highest revenue.

“Even during the time of General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), some states were declared as not having money to pay, and he released money for them to pay, those states still went ahead and refused to pay.

“It is not a question of the quantum of money they have or what it is that they decide to do with such money. If they get their priority right, a lot can happen.

“If you allow the situation to remain the way it is today, inflation flying, devaluation of the currency, this N615,000 will not last. For the next one year, it will not be enough for the workers.”
